Anatomy of a great veterinary clinic web site |
 |
I started designing web sites in 1997. Good web design tools were virtually non-existent and it was frustrating at times, but I was hooked. The Internet has evolved much since then, and I have learned a lot. Back then, a web site for a veterinary hospital was a novelty. Now it is a necessity. Let's look at what makes a veterinary practice web site useful to viewers and to the practice it represents.
I would love to see your practice web site and welcome your thoughts on what makes a "great" site for you. Please consider adding in your favorite veterinary practice site to the new Show and Tell area for practice web sites, formerly Featured Practices.

Pet Food Recall Verdict: Probation and Fine for Tainted Food Importers |
 |
After almost three years, the owners of Chemnutra, Inc., the company responsible for importing and distributing a tainted ingredient used in pet food and responsible for thousands of pet deaths, were sentenced in federal court. On Friday, February 5, 2010, the Office Of The United States Attorney Western District Of Missouri issued this press release:
Sally Qing Miller, 43, a Chinese national, and her husband, Stephen S. Miller, 57, both of Las Vegas, Nev., were sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge John T. Maughmer this morning to three years of probation. The court also ordered their company, Chemnutra, Inc., to pay a $25,000 fine. Sally Miller and Stephen Miller were each ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.
The court ruled that no further restitution would be imposed in light of a $24 million settlement in the related civil suit reached in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. Read full press release
Depth and scope of the 2007 pet food recalls
I vividly remember reading the paper on a sunny Saturday in March of 2007 - St. Patrick's Day, learning about the beginnings of the 2007 pet food recall. At least the beginning of what was to published. Case reports of animals becoming ill or dying from pet foods actually began quietly in late 2006. The pet food recall timeline spanned many months.

Animal Bites, Scratches and Injuries |
 |
Animals, even well-trained ones, can be unpredictable. All animals - pets or wildlife - that are stressed, frightened or injured will often bite and scratch, and should be treated with extreme caution.
In addition to being mindful of diseases such as about rabies, pet owners should also be aware of the potential danger of infection from animal bites and scratches. Puncture wounds from bites are often worse than they look at first glance; damage occurs beneath the skin surface. It is best to visit your doctor, the sooner the better.

Cats Photo Quiz: Boy Cat or Girl Cat? |
|
Do you think you can tell the sex of a cat at first glance? It may not be as easy as you think. Even gender-based color patterns are not always a solid clue. Names may not be a giveaway either.(I once had a female cat named Arthur [long story]), although I've never seen a male cat named Betty. Many of the cats pictured here have already appeared in picture galleries on this site. Links to those pages will be included with the answer sheet. You can choose your own "difficulty level" by selecting the number of questions you want to answer. Then, when you've finished, you can return and take the quiz again. The pictures are scrambled each time, so each time you take the test they'll be in a different order. Study the picture, then select your best guess. This is a javascript-based quiz, so be sure your browser supports javascript. Let's have some fun with this Boy - Girl cat quiz. For starters, do you think the cat pictured here is a boy or a girl cat? Since I first posted this in September of 2006, 19 people have guessed at the picture. I wonder how many of them actually took the entire quiz? Those who didn't missed most of the fun. Click the link, Peeps. Photo © Jan Kama

Cat Picture of the Week: Romeo |
|
Romeo is a beautiful, pristine white cat. However, Jennifer has written one of the most compelling arguments I've ever seen for keeping cats indoors, sufficient reason alone for me to include him as a Cat of the Week. I hope others who read this, who might be on the fence about making their cats indoors-only will take the plunge. She writes, in part: Romeo has been my best friend since 2002. I am convinced that God made him especially for me. In 2005, he developed Glaucoma as a result of a toxoplasmosis infection. This disease was transmitted to him when he dined upon a rodent. I swear I feed him - he just enjoyed doing the kitty cat serial killer thing. I have since domesticated him entirely. He only goes outdoors on a leash. He is the talk of the neighborhood when he struts his stuff along the streets like any dog would do. If there is one thing that I have learned is that he is living a very happy life as an indoor cat.He came to me as a stray and I was afraid that I would kill his spirit if I made him an indoor cat. I eventually learned that allowing him to roam the hills was exposing him to so many dangers. I made the decision to keep him indoors after his. . .Read moreYou may submit your own white cat photos by following the Photo Submission Guidelines. (Please use "White Cat Photo" as the subject of your email.) If you write as compelling a story as Jennifer did, your cat may even be selected as a Cat of the Week on this site. Leaving your job? Don't forget your 401(k) |
|
Question: I'm in my 30's and have a 401(k) from a previous job, 75% of which is invested in a variety of stock portfolios. Although my stock holdings have recovered a bit recently, I'm still down about ,000 from my peak balance. I'm planning to roll over this old 401(k) into either the 401(k) at my new job or into an IRA account, but I'm wondering whether I should do the rollover now while stocks are still cheap or wait until the market has recovered and then do it. What do think? --Todd Gerecke, Lynden, Washington
