Tell us about it - dealing with thrombocytopenia |
 |
Thrombocytopenia is the medical term for low platelet count. Platelets are the blood component responsible for clotting. A low platelet count may mean excessive bleeding or bruising, among other things. There are many causes for this condition, some of them life-threatening. Read more about thrombocytopenia to learn about other potential causes for this condition.
After I posted this glossary entry on the About.com Vet Med Facebook page, and people began to share their pet's stories about dealing with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. That is when the body's immune system, for a variety of possible reasons, attacks and destroys its own platelets.

Nature's Variety Recall Expanded |
 |
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Nature's Variety have announced an expansion of the Nature's Variety recall on raw frozen chicken dietsthat was first announced February 11, 2010.
According to the Nature's Variety Food Safety Update from Reed Howlet CEO:
"Nature's Variety has received new test results from an outside facility that indicate that Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with the "Best If Used By" date of 10/29/10 and Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with the "Best If Used By" date of 11/9/10 may be contaminated with Salmonella. Therefore, we are voluntarily recalling these date codes of product from the marketplace. Also, out of an abundance of caution, we are expanding our voluntary recall to include all Chicken Formula and Organic Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diets for dogs and cats with any "Best If Used By" date on or before 2/5/11."
At this time, the recall only involves the chicken frozen raw diets. Please visit the Nature's Variety web site for UPC codes and food varieties affected by this recall.

Glossary Term: Thrombocytopenia |
 |
Thrombocytopenia is a low platelet count in the blood; a potentially life-threatening blood disorder. Learn what platelets are and some of the common reasons this condition can occur in animals.
Today's glossary entry has special meaning for me, as I will be fostering a Greyhound I met at a recent "Greyhound haul" I helped with. He is a two-year old Greyhound who was discovered to be thrombocytopenic prior to being neutered. The plan is to pick him up today and get him back to health while fostering so he can be on his way to his forever home. If all goes as planned, I will be blogging about him later this week.
Interesting sidenote: Greyhounds typically have lower platelet counts than other breeds of dogs, but normal for Greyhounds. They are also prone to diseases that can cause thrombocytopenia. Two of these disease profiles will be added to the site this week.

Dog Breed of the Week: Australian Cattle Dog |
|
The Australian Cattle Dog is a breed with a special knack for herding cattle. This energetic dog breed also makes a wonderful companion for the right home. Named for its country of origin, the ACD was developed in the 19th century to herd cattle on large ranches in Queensland. In fact, the breed had a key role in the development of the Australian Beef industry. Fearless, athletic and intelligent, there is no better cattle herder than the ACD.
Today's ACD is still an amazing herder and worker, but is also quite successful in agility, flyball, Frisbee, and other canine competitions. This breed makes a wonderful companion for an owner with an active lifestyle. This breed is no couch potato and needs to work in order to be completely happy. If you are looking for an energetic, loyal and intelligent dog that will make a great exercise partner, consider the Australian Cattle Dog. Have you had experience with this beautiful and amazing dog breed? Tell others the story - talk about your Australian Cattle Dog.

Dog Breed of the Week: Bullmastiff |
|
The Bullmastiff is a powerful dog that was originally developed for protection. English gamekeepers in the mid-19th century crossed the Mastiff and the Bulldog. The result was a powerful, fearless dog that could stop poachers in their tracks.
Today's Bullmastiff is still a highly capable guard dog, but the breed is most treasured as a companion. Despite it's powerful and somewhat intimidating appearance, this is a gentle and affectionate dog that forms a solid bond with it's family members. However, the Bullmastiff's tough side does instinctively comes out when necessary. One important thing to know about this breed: be prepared for slobber. The Bullmastiff owner tends to carry around a drool rag. If this sort of thing bothers you, then look elsewhere for the breed of your dreams. Otherwise, there's a lot to love about these big sweeties. Could this breed be the choice for you? Learn all about the Bullmastiff and see for yourself.
People who know Bullmastiffs simply cannot say enough wonderful things about this breed. Have you been lucky enough to share your life with a Bullmastiff? Tell your story!

Loss of a Good Cat-Man |
|
We received notice last night of the loss of a well-loved Cats Forum member, Leroy (lwittemire). Leroy had a droll sense of humor, but was no-holds-barred where it came to his deep love of cats, not only for his own, but for all cats. Leroy's passion for cats was demonstrated during Operation Holly, a forum-wide rescue for adoption of a beautiful little foundling cat who showed up at the doorstep of Jeannie, a longtime, very popular forum member. Jeannie could not keep Holly because of issues with her other cats, but was caring for her in her garage until a loving home could be found for her. Jamie, another well-liked forum member, had a co-worker who was interested in adopting a needy cat. The problem was getting Holly from Arkansas to Pennsylvania. Options were discussed: air cargo transport vs a ground relay team. All the missing links were eventually closed, and Leroy volunteered for the second relay spot, from Ohio to western PA. The photo shown here is Leroy with Holly during a stop at his home in Mansfield, Ohio. All who knew Leroy, knew of his passionate dedication to cats, including people who worked with him. He was a role model for men who love cats. Leroy was also extremely devoted to his wife, Valarie, and to his Mother. He will be sorely missed by all who shared his life, and I offer my deepest condolences to Val and the rest of his family. Please join the Cats Forum members in a Celebration of Leroy's Life. We all love you, Leroy.Loss of a Good Cat-Man originally appeared on About.com Cats on Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 at 12:41:45.Permalink | Comment | Email this

Adoptable Shelter Cat of the Week: Toffee |
|
It's hard to believe that Toffee has been in a shelter for over a year. This gorgeous girl will make a wonderful companion as an only pet in a home without very young children. Toffee is a beautiful kitty who arrived at the Placer SPCA in Roseville, California in January 2009. As of March 2010, she is by far the longest resident waiting for her forever home. When you first meet Toffee, you might find her beautiful but aloof (like any supermodel). Next, you'll notice how intelligent, curious, and playful she is. Finally, she'll let you see how very, very much she wants someone to love with face rubs and loud purrs. Read more of Toffee's story, and how to make arrangements to meet her. Placer SPCA - Your local companion animal welfare experts.

Before You Get Your First Cat |
|
Getting your first cat is a monumental decision which should not be entered into lightly. So you think you might want to get a cat, and don't know where to start. You no doubt have dozens of questions running through your mind: "Should I get a male or a female, a kitten or an older cat?" "I'd really like a purebred (name your favorite breed), but maybe I should adopt a mixed breed instead." This tutorial helps answer those questions, as well as a few you haven't thought of.Perhaps you've wanted a cat for a long time, but just recently have found your conditions "right" for a cat. Or maybe you've never been exposed to cats, but have fallen in love with a friend's cat and now want your own. In either case, please do not rush to a pet store that sells "kitten farm" "purebred" kittens. Do your homework first. I'll help you decide whether you're really ready for a cat, what kind of cat to get, and where to go to find your ideal cat. (I'll also explain why that pet store "kitten farm" kitten is a poor choice.) Leaving your job? Don't forget your 401(k) |
|
Question: I'm in my 30's and have a 401(k) from a previous job, 75% of which is invested in a variety of stock portfolios. Although my stock holdings have recovered a bit recently, I'm still down about ,000 from my peak balance. I'm planning to roll over this old 401(k) into either the 401(k) at my new job or into an IRA account, but I'm wondering whether I should do the rollover now while stocks are still cheap or wait until the market has recovered and then do it. What do think? --Todd Gerecke, Lynden, Washington
